Craig James: From NFL Stardom to Broadcast Booth and Political Ambitions

Craig James is a name that resonates in multiple arenas of American public life: professional football, sports broadcasting, and even politics. Born in Jacksonville, Texas, on January 2, 1961, James’ journey from small-town athlete to public figure is a quintessential Texas tale. Though born in East Texas, James has built strong personal and professional ties to Celina, Texas, a town with a rich football tradition and growing community pride.

His story reflects determination, resilience, and a willingness to take on new challenges in every phase of life.

Growing Up in Celina

Born on January 2, 1961, in Jacksonville, Texas, Craig James was raised in the Houston area, where his football talents began to shine. He attended Stratford High School in Houston, not Celina, where he set a Texas 4A single-season rushing record with 2,411 yards in 15 games.

It was at Stratford that James first made a name for himself as a dominant running back, catching the attention of college scouts across the nation. His early years helped establish the work ethic and athleticism that would define his career on and off the field.

Craig James at SMU: The Pony Express and a Legacy of Greatness

Craig James chose to attend Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas, beginning in 1979. His decision offered proximity to home and the chance to contribute to a rising powerhouse in college football. James quickly made an impact, helping transform SMU’s offense into one of the nation’s best.

Alongside Eric Dickerson, James formed one-half of the legendary “Pony Express” backfield. Their styles were complementary: James, a tough, versatile runner and receiver, and Dickerson, a speedster with exceptional power.

The Pony Express: A Legendary Backfield

The pairing of Craig James and Eric Dickerson was a strategic masterstroke by SMU. While both players were individually exceptional, their complementary styles made the Mustangs nearly unstoppable. James was known for his toughness, vision, and ability to catch passes out of the backfield, while Dickerson’s raw speed and power made him a nightmare for defenders. Together, they brought a balance to SMU’s offense that few teams could counter.

In the 1981 and 1982 seasons, James and Dickerson propelled SMU to new heights:

  • 1981 Southwest Conference Champions with a 10-1 record

  • 1982 Southwest Conference Champions, going undefeated in the regular season at 11-0-1

James rushed for 3,743 yards during his college career, earning All-Southwest Conference honors and securing his place among SMU’s all-time greats. Under coach Ron Meyer, the Mustangs rose in national prominence, regularly finishing in the top 10 rankings.

James’ contributions brought national attention to SMU and laid the foundation for the program’s short-lived but spectacular success.

NFL Career: A Dynamic Playmaker

Craig James was drafted by the New England Patriots in the seventh round (187th overall) of the 1983 NFL Draft, though he initially signed with the USFL’s Washington Federals. When the USFL folded, he joined the Patriots in 1984.

His breakout season came in 1985, rushing for 1,227 yards and earning Pro Bowl honors. That same year, he helped lead the Patriots to Super Bowl XX, where they ultimately lost to the Chicago Bears.

Injuries shortened James’ career, and he retired from the NFL in 1988, but not before proving himself as a versatile and reliable offensive weapon.

Sports Broadcasting: A New Arena

After retiring, James smoothly transitioned to sports broadcasting, bringing firsthand experience and sharp football insights to television audiences. He began with ESPN, then joined CBS Sports in 1996, and later returned to ESPN in 2003.

As a college football analyst, James earned praise for his ability to break down plays, explain complex strategies, and communicate the game’s nuances. He became a recognizable figure on major bowl broadcasts and college football coverage nationwide.

Political Aspirations: The 2012 U.S. Senate Race

In 2012, Craig James entered the political arena, running as a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Texas. His campaign emphasized conservative values, religious freedom, and fiscal responsibility.

Despite his name recognition, James finished fourth in the Republican primary, earning 3.6% of the vote. His campaign was marred by controversy, including scrutiny over his role in the firing of Texas Tech coach Mike Leach and comments on social issues that drew national criticism.

Although his political ambitions were curtailed, James remained committed to faith-based advocacy and public service.

Life After Politics

Following his Senate run, Craig James withdrew from the national spotlight. He became active in Christian ministries and is believed to have pursued seminary studies. His work has included advocacy for traditional family values and community service.

James’ life illustrates a pattern of adaptability and reinvention. From athlete to broadcaster to political candidate, he consistently sought to make an impact while holding firm to his personal convictions.

Connection to Celina, Texas

Though Craig James was not raised in Celina, his post-football life has deep ties to the community. He and his family settled in Celina, where he owned a 14.5-acre estate, reinforcing his bond with North Texas.

James has played an active role in Celina’s civic development, serving as President of the Celina Economic Development Corporation Board from 2003 to 2010. In addition, he co-founded James Land & Development, a company based in Celina that focuses on real estate investment and development throughout the state.

His son, Adam James, graduated from Celina High School, further embedding the family into the town’s fabric.

James’ involvement has contributed to Celina’s transformation from a rural town to one of the fastest-growing cities in North Texas, leaving a lasting legacy well beyond the football field.

Legacy and Inspiration

Craig James’ legacy spans sports, media, public service, and business. From the turf of SMU to the halls of ESPN and into the civic spaces of Celina, his journey reflects the grit and ambition often associated with Texas values.

Though his career has included setbacks, James remains a symbol of perseverance and boldness. In Celina, he continues to serve as a role model for young athletes, aspiring leaders, and those who believe in seizing life’s many opportunities.
